Picking the Sample
A simple calculation of mean incomes for the two genders does not explain when the means differ.
Incomes could differ because levels of education differ. Controlling for education eliminates this possibility.
The slopes and intercepts could both differ across genders.
Estimating two separate regressions accomplishes the same thing.
